The Channel 3 (Fund raisers for the Disabled) club started 1st July 1983 by: Mr Winston le Prevost “Guernsey Man”(secretary) and his wife Lorraine “Roustabout”, Mr Peter Vivash “Trapper” (Chairman) and his wife Elizabeth “Flower Lady”, Elizabeth’s mother Mrs Madeline Drake “Mother”, Mr S. Tye “Old Cockney”, Mr Bill Martch “Markapolo” & his wife Dolly “Dolly” (Treasurer) With Mr Ray Smith “Pixie” and his wife Ann “witch” The names in ITALIC are their CB handles. The C3 club was set-up to raise money to help disabled people on the Isle of Wight. Funds were raised by jumble sales, competitions, & sales at eyeball meetings, Christmas raffles etc. The monthly eyeball meetings were held at Newport Golf Club, it was nothing to have 120 CB’ers present with an extra big raffle held at the Christmas meeting. By April 1984 £1,600 had already been raised, some of which was spent to buy electric battery cars for the disabled. One was a second hand 1977 Triumph Dolomite registration number PPK 463R for £850.00 from Lugley Street Motors. This then needed a set of hand controls fitted at a cost of £116.19 Also a flexi-stand was bought costing £530.00 for Medina House School. This stand allowed youngsters with no feeling in their legs to be supported upright for long periods to make them more mobile. From the 1st July.1983 to the 16th April.1988 £5,880.00 was raised! On the 27th March 1984 a Red Scoota was bought for £599.00 In April 1986 two members Mark & Roger ran in the London Marathon to raise funds. In May 1989 £200.00 was presented to St Mary’s Hospital for the purchase of scales for “at risk babies” There were many more donations were made over the years. In 1998 members of the India Whisky DX group became more involved and attended the Channel 3 eyeballs at the Golf Club. Mr Peter Vivash “Trapper” is still the Chairman, Colin Symons “Gunner” Treasurer. Colin’s wife Janet helped with the raffles as did my wife June & me Barry Cant “Scanman” Brian Butcher “Grasshopper” and his wife Gina “Laughing Girl” all took turns in buying the raffle prizes. On the 27th September 2003 £500.00 was presented to the I.o.W. Spina Bifida Association at the Riverside Centre Newport. On the 2nd September 2004 £250.00 was presented to Polars residential home towards an emergency lifting cushion. On the 21st October 2000 £508.50p was presented to Headway, this was raised by holding a sponsored 24 hour modulation on air. In 2000 because of difficulties in booking the Golf Club for the monthly eyeball we tried various meeting rooms around Newport. We held quite a few meetings at the Riverside Centre but restrictions on holding our Christmas supper led us to move to the Camp Hill Prison Officers Club. By now the numbers attending had fallen sharply as had the use of Citizens Band Radio. The last eyeball for now was held on the 18th December 2004,because by now only 5 or 6 people were attending and the meeting were sadly not viable. Mr Peter Vivash “Trapper” has been the Chairman for twenty-one years! Well-done Peter. On the 5th March 2005 two more donations were made to: The friends of Polars received £350.00 because two members of C3 are now resident there and Different Strokes received £300.00 they are a charity, which caters for young victims of strokes. 73 Barry, India Whisky 223 |

C3 were pleased to donate £250.00 towards an emergency lifting cushion for Polars Residential Home. Two of the residents were supports at the C3 Eyeball’s over the years. They are Dick “Pegleg” & Madeline “Mum” both shown at the bottom centre of the pictures. Also in the picture on the left are Peter “Trapper” Brian “Grasshopper” & Colin “Gunner” In the picture on the right are front left Margart, Chair of the Polars League of Friends presenting the lifting cushion to Mandy, head of the home with Madeline. At the back from the left Paul, the home’s training manager, Peter Chairman C3, and his wife Elizabeth “Flower”, with other C3 supports Shelly, Brian “Flymo” and Colin “Gunner” The Channel 3 group has been running since 1983 and has raised well over £10,000 for charity.
The Channel 3 monthly Eyeball is now closed as from December 2004. The Channel 3 eyeball, that was held on the 3rd Saturday each month has now ceased. Over the last few years the number of people attending has falling sharply and the meetings are no longer viable. The last meeting was held on the 18th December 2004. Many thank to all those who attended over the years. A special thank you must go to Trapper who as a founder member has been involved since 1983.
