Silva & Jim Jenkins took over the pub in 1964. The pub was then rebuilt. I remember that quite a few clay pipes & bones were found under the old floors |
I had my first ever pint in the "Mutton" It was "Boiler", a small bottle of brown ale & half a pint of mild ale mixed. This was priced at one shilling & eight pence, then an expensive drink! Around 8p today. Before Silva & Jim Jenkins took over the pub it was run by Keith a temporary landlord put in by Mew Langton's then the Islands biggest brewery. I think Mews most popular beer was XP bitter. Whitbread said they would keep this going when they took over but it unfortunately they soon dropped it. |
The Mutton rebuilt, it then became a very popular pub. It was around this time food in pubs became popular. I remember the locals moaned the smell of the food ruined their pint. On Tuesday's the pub remained open till 4 pm because of Newport Cattle Market. It changed from Mews to Strong's in 1965 then Whitbread in 1968 It was renamed as the "Publican" The pub has now been shut for a few years and due to be pulled down as of February 2007. If you can add to this please contact me on the e-mail link below. |

Please note, this is my history with the mutton The DVD does not have this amount of information because it would be difficult to read, but each picture is titled & dated & a good trip down memory lane. Barry Cant. |
