Shoulder of Mutton Pub, renamed the Publican, Newport, Isle of Wight.

Real beer in wooden barrels!

Silva & Jim Jenkins took over the pub in 1964.

The pub was then rebuilt.

I remember that quite a few clay pipes & bones were found under the old floors

I had my first ever pint in the “Mutton” around 1962.

It was  “Boiler”, a small bottle of brown ale & half a pint of mild ale mixed. This was priced at one shilling & eight pence, then an expensive drink! Around 8p  today. Before Silva & Jim Jenkins took over the pub it was run by Keith a temporary landlord put in by Mew Langton's then the Islands biggest brewery. I think Mews most popular beer was XP bitter. Whitbread said they would keep this going when they took over but it unfortunately they soon dropped it.

The Mutton rebuilt, it then became a very popular pub. It was around this time food in pubs became popular. I remember the locals moaned the smell of the food ruined their pint. On Tuesday’s the pub remained open till 4 pm because of Newport Cattle Market. It changed from Mews to Strong’s  in 1965 then to Whitbread in 1968. It was renamed as the “Publican” in 1983. The pub has now been shut for a few years and was demolish 31.3.2011
